Vehicle Painters can make a thirty-year-old car shine like new. They are like the ‘make-up artists’ of the automotive industry.

What sort of things do Car Painting workers do?

  • Prepare vehicle surfaces by filing, chiselling or sanding
  • Mix and match paint so that it is similar to paint shade, or select pre-mixed paint
  • Apply primer and finish coats using spray guns and rub down surfaces between coats
  • Touch-up paintwork and apply polish to vehicles
  • Paint signs or artwork on vehicles
  • Treat vehicles with rust-proofing chemicals

Where do Car Painting workers work?

  • In vehicle repair shops
  • Motor vehicle manufacturers
  • For large transport firms
  • For themselves

What sort of training do you need?

To become a Vehicle Painter/Spray Painter usually requires completion of a Certificate III Apprenticeship in Automotive Vehicle Body. Employers generally require Year 11 with good results in English, maths and science. The length of training can vary and may involve both on-the-job and off-the-job components. The off-the-job training is provided through Registered Training Organisations to Certificate III level. You may be able to start training for this occupation while still at school.

Vehicle Painters/Spray Painters often set up small businesses in partnership with Panel Beaters. Some experienced Vehicle Painters/Spray Painters may become loss assessors for insurance companies.
