If you have experienced those hot summer days when beads of sweat start to drip from your ears, chances are the one thing you wished for was air conditioning. These are the times when we need the services of a skilled Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Mechanic who installs, tests, fault finds, repairs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment ranging from a fridge, to a coldroom, frozenfood processing plant, and air conditioning a loungeroom to a hospital ward and a multi-story office building.

What sort of things do Refrigeration workers do?

  • Install refrigeration and air conditioning systems and parts such as compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, switches and gauges, air filters, and copper pipework for refrigerant   
  • Test and commission refrigeration and air conditioning systems
  • Recover refrigerant from refrigeration and air conditioning systems, pressure test them to prevent leaks and adds refrigerant in accordance with regulations and governing procedures
  • Service, fault find, repair or replace faulty industrial, commercial and household refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems

Where do Refrigeration workers work?

  • For heating and cooling contractors
  • For refrigeration and air conditioning service and repair companies
  • Some work for firms specialising in cold-storage, food-treatment plants and refrigeration on ships
  • Self-employed or as subcontractors

What sort of training do you need?

To become a Refrigeration Mechanic you require the completion of an Apprenticeship in Certificate III in Electrotechnology Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Employers generally require Year 10 for entry with good results in english,maths and science. The length of training can vary, but will generally take about 4 years and may involve both on-the-job and off-the-job components. The off-the-job training is provided through Registered Training Organisations to Certificate III level. You may be able to start training for this occupation while still at school.
