  • Consult with clients to discuss requirements and advise on hair care

  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Provide services such as colouring, lightening and  highlighting, conditioning, chemical straightening, relaxing and curling
  • Design and maintain beards and moustaches

  • In nursing homes or hostels
  • In theatre and television
  • In freelance high fashion

What sort of training do you need?

To become a Hairdresser usually requires completion of an Apprenticeship in Hairdressing. Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require Year 10 as a minimum with a preference for Year 12 with good results in English. The length of the training can vary and may involve both on-the-job and off-the-job components. The off-the-job training is provided through Registered Training Organisations to Certificate III level. Full time institutional based programs are also available.

Smart Move

Hairdressing offers a very mobile career. Skilled Hairdressers may find employment as stylists for the theatre, in television or film or with advertising agencies. Australian Hairdressers are highly regarded all over the world.
