Detailed Joinery & Shopfitting

Ever walked into a store and wondered where all the shelves, fittings and counters were made? Chances are they are the product of a skilled Joiner and Shopfitter. Joiners and Shopfitters are important people in the retail business.

What sort of things do Detailed Joinery & Shopfitting workers do?

  • Read and interpret designs and specifications
  • Select and cut timber to size and shape
  • Cut joints, using wood-cutting machines or hand tools
  • Work with plastic laminates, perspex or metals
  • Fabricate and install shopfronts, showcases and counters
  • Use CNC (computer numerically controlled) machinery to assemble fabricated components

Where do Detailed Joinery & Shopfitting workers work?

  • Construction companies
  • Joinery workshops, large or small
  • Specialist shopfitting firms
  • Manufacturing
  • Some are self-employed

    Joiners work mostly in the factory or workshop. Shopfitters spend around half their time in the factory making the units, the other half on site fitting them.

What sort of training do you need?

To become a Joiner and Shopfitter usually requires completion of an Apprenticeship in Shopfitting and Joinery. Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require Year 10 with good results in English and maths. The length of training can vary and may involve both on-the-job and off-the-job components. The off-the-job training is provided through Registered Training Organisations. You will do core subjects for both areas, then may specialise in Joinery or Shopfitting or Stair Building through electives. You may be able to start training for this occupation while still at school.

Skilled Joiners and Shopfitters will be sought after, as many builders value the fine and detailed skills that are developed by people experienced in these areas.
