Landscape Construction

  • Sydney Regional Competition 2007: Gold
  • National Competition 2008: Silver

How did you get into the industry?
When I left year 12, I took on some part time work through a relative who has a Landscape Construction business. After a year of working full time in a warehouse I decided to pursue a career in landscaping, and so decided to take on an apprenticeship.

Would you recommend a trade/skill based career to others?
Certainly, learning and developing specialised skills is a very fulfilling feeling.

How has WorldSkills Australia helped you so far personally & professionally?
WorldSkills Australia has helped in the development of my apprenticeship and given me a boost which has allowed me to confidently take on bigger tasks at work. I now have no doubt that landscape construction was the right career choice.

Would you recommend others participate in the WorldSkills Competitions?
I would definitely recommend anyone to participate in a WorldSkills Competition for many reasons. It is a fantastic experience and competing with some of Australia's finest apprentices this year was a great honour.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The guys I work with are great. I enjoy working outside and sometimes we work near the beach. I'm never stuck in the same place all the time. Once a job is finished it is great to see the client ecstatic at the transformation we have made to their gardens and outdoor living.

What do you hope to achieve in both short and long terms of your career?
Short term I would like to complete my apprenticeship and continue working in my current job as a qualified tradesman, and in the long term I would like to work for myself.
